GitHub’s New MCP Registry: Connecting AI to Real-World Tools

Posted on September 17, 2025

GitHub just launched something called the MCP Registry. In simple terms, it’s a new “app store” designed to help AI assistants connect to and control your other software, like Notion, Stripe, or Monday.com.

Right now, most AI is “stuck in a box.” It can write an email for you, but it can’t actually send it. This new registry is designed to fix that problem.

The “USB for AI” Analogy

The easiest way to understand this is to think of it as the “USB for AI.”

Years ago, every computer device printers, mice, keyboards had its own special plug. It was a mess. Then, USB came along and created one standard plug that works for (almost) everything.

MCP (which stands for Model-Context-Protocol) aims to be that one standard “plug” for AI. It’s a shared language. If an AI “speaks MCP” and a tool like Notion “speaks MCP,” they can instantly connect without any custom-built translators.

The “MCP Registry” you’ve seen in screenshots is simply the “app store” where developers can find all these official “plugs” (called “MCP servers”) for their favorite tools.

Why This Matters to You

This is a big deal because it’s the step that moves AI from just “talking” to “doing.”

It’s the difference between asking an AI to write a report and asking it to:

“Summarize my sales from Stripe, put that summary on a new page in Notion, and then create a task in Monday.com for my team to review it.”

Because of MCP, the AI will actually be able to do all of those steps. It’s the essential groundwork for the next generation of AI assistants that can truly work for you across all the different apps you use every day.
